issues related to the quality of life gain more and more research interests from scholars and policy makers. individual scholars, research institutes as well as government agencies have began appraising and comparing the quality of life across a number of different countries and regions. in this proposed work, we aim to study and compare the quality of life in 29 countries and societies in asia, which encompass an ever largest and unparalleled area as far as the region of asia is concerned, with a comprehensive and systematic research design. utilizing the asiabarometer surveys data conducted in 29 societies throughout asia from 2003 to 2008, we systematically explore demographics such as income and educational level, a way of life such as the extent of access to public utilities and digital devices, value priorities, specific life domain assessments and overall quality of life. given the expected and real diversities and peculiarities in asia, we would do best to emphasize the bottom-up approach. namely, we ask how the ordinary citizens of these societies live their daily lives, what they value for their lot in life; and how they feel about what they experience in their society on a daily basis. this focus on the daily lives of ordinary people in asia is another unique feature of this proposed work. we adopt the notion of subjective quality of life or how people feel about objective conditions and other life experiences, and we conceptualize it as two levels, global and domain. as well as considering all the things that they think important to them and judge the overall quality of life, people can consider particular aspects or domains of their lives and judge each of these domains separately. the aforementioned asiabarometer survey asked two sets of questions about the overall quality of life in terms of happiness, enjoyment, and accomplishment and about satisfaction with sixteen specific life domains. we first examine basic country profile, demographics, lifestyles, value priorities, specific life domain assessment and overall quality of life in each individual society. we also estimate the effects of demographics, lifestyles, value priorities, life domain assessment on overall life quality within society, using factor analysis and ordered logit regression. we then compare the results between 29 societies as well as comparing between sub-regions of asia: east, southeast, south and central asia. we analyze pooled data for the entire region and the sub-regions to look for generalized characteristics of life quality using multilevel logit regression.
