Scott drew on several sources from the 14th and 15th centuries, including narrative poems by John Barbour and Blind Hary, and historical works by John of Fordun, Walter Bower, Andrew of Wyntoun, and Hector Boece. The novel is praised for its vivid characters, romantic tension, political intrigue, and accurate depiction of life in medieval Scotland.
