The tale begins in a raucus bar not far from New York University's Washington square campus. There we meet all the characters save one: God, who arrives in front of Dr. Donovan's apartment in a blazing thunderstorm and who requires four other people to help him tell Job's, and his own, story. Job's Errand is both a historical and a philosophical novel that gives a dramatic account of the Book of Job's creation (and with it the Judeo-Christian tradition's creation) while simultaneously exploring the same deep philosophical concerns that challenged the ancient Biblical author and made his Job famous. Finally God, in a new face-to-face meeting with Job, gives an unprecedented and intimate view of himself that is the high point of the book's drama and that completely upends most people's image of who God is and how divinity works.
