The Book of Baruch invites its readers to participate in the ritual recitation of an intricate liturgical script that draws on various scriptural traditions to memorialize the “crisis” of exile as a culturally expansive signifier of collective loss and disaffection. Participants in the ritual “perform” different exilic subjectivities, inhabiting agential positions to which they have no direct or original connection, thereby reorienting their sense of empathy and responsibility. This study adopts an innovative approach to the book by incorporating insights from liturgical studies, trauma studies, and diaspora studies, as well as studies on the social construction of memory.
