Once, long ago, Theo Maehr hiked his favorite loop trail up Mount Lafayette in New Hampshire. In a sheltered place out of the wind, he sat and gazed at the beautiful landscape. He received this clear message from the mountain: "If you want to know silence, remember me." He was surprised and excited and quieted, all at once.
