Nacida en Lockport, Nueva York, en 1938, esta autora se ha consolidado como una de las voces más influyentes de la literatura contemporánea en Estados Unidos. A lo largo de su carrera, ha recibido prestigiosos galardones como el National Book Award, el PEN/Malamud Award y el Prix Fémina Étranger.
