Before the automobile, in the early days of America, travel and transportation were much more varied and difficult. In Twenty Counties, Dean E. Phillips delves into the world of America before modern transportation. He explores the various modes of transport including footpaths that allowed individuals to travel the wilderness and commercial travel during Colonial times which was mostly done by water. Northern New York in particular was blessed with a nearly unbroken water system around the Adirondack Mountains and the Great Lakes to the west, placing it astride the most efficient route for the movement of goods and the military on the east coast. Through this work, readers will acquire a new knowledge and appreciation for how travel was in American before the train and automobile.

About the Author

Dean E. Phillips has been a lifetime member of the Fort Brewerton Historical Society and an avid reader of history books. His prior book is entitled Depression, War, and Good Times which is about growing up in the 1930s and 40s. Professionally, he was a civil engineer in a private practice in Connecticut from 1970 to 2005. He was then a pro bono attorney in the Georgia Legal Service programs from 2008-2014. He is now retired.
