$ 465.92The sea has fallen sixty-two meters, and nobody pretends it will stop falling anymore. It is the thirteenth year of the Recession, and Sena Voss - licensed Sounder of Stoneharbor - has spent her entire adult life measuring the retreat: the sounding lead, the wax book, the white scar of the old waterline painted on the cliff in the first year by men who thought the sea would come back. Every morning she rows out with her crew: Beck, who hauls his beloved seismometer down to the foreshore and listens to the deep the way other men listen to their wives; Petra, sixty-one, who ran the customhouse back when there was still a harbor worth smuggling through; and Tommie, fifteen, barefoot and feral-bright, who feels the seafloor through the soles of their feet better than any licensed instrument on the foreshore. Then, on an ordinary spring morning, all three of Beck’s drums draw the same impossible trace. An eleven-minute pulse. A draw and a release. Steady as a heartbeat - and quickening. It is not surf. It is not tide. It is coming from below the Shelf, from the dark fields at the bottom of the world, and the measurements line up with the uptake exactly: when the trace rises, the sea drops faster. When it releases, there is a pause. Like a lull. Like sipping. A chemosynthetic colonial superorganism, kilometers across, rooted in the crust - and it is drinking the sea, and now, for the first time in thirteen years, they can hear it doing it. The ancients heard it too. Eleven thousand years ago, on the Drowned Mile, they carved its portrait into stone: a wave. A mouth, open. They fed it, and it slowed, and they kept feeding it while their world drowned - and now the tribute fields are policy, the Reclamation Fields are industry, and the sea keeps falling anyway. So the Foreshore Compact is done feeding it. On Thursday they will vote on the Cauterization: Sloane Vestra’s plan to kill Field Twelve - the young field, the fruiting one - with two hundred deep-placed charges, explosives and incendiaries delivered by cable from six barges on a slack-tide night. Kill the thing that drinks, and the sea might come back. That is the math. Sloane believes the math, and she stands where it points, and that is why people follow her into terrible ideas. But the math needs a target. And the target needs a chart, refined to half a meter, drawn by Sena’s own hand - her winter soundings, her numbers, turned into a weapon. Petra’s warning follows her down the shingle: Your chart won’t be harmless. Sena Voss has spent thirteen years sounding the truth. Now she has to decide what the truth is for.
