Reseña del libro "The Shift in the Gender Composition at the Mli (en Inglés)"
The results of the fifth General Population and Housing Census (RGPH5), conducted in Mali in 2022, reveal a surprise: for the first time since the first census in 1976, there are more men than women. The sex ratio stands at 101.1 men per 100 women, compared to 98.4 in 2009 and 95.3 in 1976. The result is puzzling, since the two main factors that typically shape the sex structure of a Sahelian population-higher male mortality at all ages and labor emigration consisting overwhelmingly of men-should have produced the opposite effect. This book offers a three-part explanation. It first establishes that the national male surplus is numerically modest: 117,621 people, or 0.53% of the census population. It then shows, by breaking down this surplus among the subpopulations that INSTAT itself distinguishes, that collective households- barracks, boarding schools, construction camps, and correctional facilities-where the female population is only 13.5%-account for 65% of this surplus, even though they represent just 0.47% of the census population.
