THE SECRET GARDEN: - is written by American author Frances Hodgson Burnett and published in book form in 1911. This is novel for children and is a pastoral story of self-healing that became a classic of children's literature. This book is considered to be among Burnett's best work. The novel revolves on Mary Lennox, a selﬁsh and disagreeable 10-year-old girl, who is living in India with her wealthy British family. Neglected by her parents, Mary is spoiled by her servants. Mary is orphaned when a cholera epidemic kills her parents and the servants.After staying brieﬂy with an English clergyman, she is sent to England to live with a widowed uncle, his huge Yorkshire estate, but he is rarely there. Consequently, she is brought to the estate by the head housekeeper who shuts her into a room and tells her not to explore the house. Later on, her interaction with nature transforms her and she becomes kinder and more considerate. The Secret Garden is a tale of transformation and feeling of extreme happiness in the presence of nature. The physical and spiritual healing that Mary experiences in the garden is mirrored in the nature's seasons

Frances H. Burnett (1849, Manchester, Inglaterra - 1924, Plandome, Estados Unidos) perdió a su padre cuando tan solo tenía cinco años. La familia hubo de sobrellevar penurias económicas y en 1865 se trasladó a Estados Unidos. Ocho años más tarde Frances se casó, pero antes ya había conseguido publicar en algunas revistas americanas como Godey’s Lady’s Book, Godey’s, Peterson’s Ladies’ Magazine, Scribner’s Monthly y Harper’s. Contaba 28 años cuando apareció That
Lass O’ Lowrie’s (1877), su primera novela. No obstante, fue El pequeño lord Fauntleroy (1886) la historia que más contribuyó en vida de la autora a su popularidad. Estaba dirigida, junto con Sara Crewe (1888) y El jardín secreto (1911), al lector infantil. Esta última se considera su aportación más valiosa.
