Gregory Falkovich nació en Siberia, Rusia, en 1958. Creció en Chernigov, una pequeña ciudad al norte de Ucrania. A los 17 años regresó a Siberia para estudiar en la Universidad de Novosibirsk. Comenzó a investigar en física teórica mientras estudiaba, en 1978. En 1981 obtuvo un máster en física con honores y empezó a trabajar en la rama siberiana de la Academia de Ciencias. Su pasatiempo en ese momento era ser comediante de stand-up a tiempo parcial. En 1988-1989 editó un periódico anticomunista clandestino y estuvo brevemente involucrado en la política relacionada con las primeras elecciones libres en Rusia. En 1991 dejó Rusia para ir al Instituto de Ciencias Weizmann en Israel, donde trabaja desde entonces, desde becario postdoctoral hasta jefe de departamento. Falkovich escribió su primer libro "Espectros de turbulencia de Kolmogorov" (con Zakharov y Lvov, publicado por Springer) en 1991. En la actualidad, esta es su publicación más citada.
