The story goes through the "normal" life of Alex, his two siblings, and his parents who use physical abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect to parent them. After Alex talks with an adult at school, he learns it is normal to talk about the best and worst parts of life at home without being afraid of getting in trouble. A "new normal" begins after that day. His parents are more available if conflicts arise with his siblings. He then is given new kinds of discipline at home that he finds to be fair for the whole family. The book has basic information for helping the child understand the "new normal" and helpful discussion questions for young children and teenagers. It is perfect for reading together if you are family, foster family, caregiver, counselor, social worker, teacher, or family friend to help the child with abuse and neglect.
