Darwen Bank Manor was a strange place, for one thing it had been cut in half. A wall had been built across the large entrance hall that created two dwellings.When the Godwins moved in to the front of the house they were told in no uncertain terms that they were never to visit the other half of the property and if they did they would be told to leave. As there seemed to be no way into the forbidden part of the manor the family were unconcerned by the conditions, the prize for them was the kitchen garden. At a time when 'Dig for Victory' had become a national campaign and every patch of land had been snapped up in which to grow the nation's vegetables, Brian Godwin seized the chance of growing produce for his shop with both hands. With a nine year old's curiosity, Horrocks Godwin eventually found his way to the other side of the manor and life for the family would never be the same again.
