Six-year-old James West watches through a cellar vent as the Wilson Gang burns his family's Texas farm and murders his parents. When the last three men flee across the Rio Grande into the Sierra Madre, James follows, taking a bullet in Coahuila before tracking the Wilson brothers to their fortified hacienda deep in the Mexican desert.
He goes in during a dust storm. He doesn't come back the same man who went in - but he comes back.
