Nikolái Vasílievich Gógol nació en 1809, en la actual Ucrania, y murió en Moscú, en 1852. Se trasladó a San Petersburgo en 1828, y luego de sobrellevar algunos contratiempos, ingresó en los círculos literarios de esa ciudad en 1831. Su humor, el tratamiento de los temas, el empleo de la lengua y de los recursos estilísticos dejaron huellas profundas e hicieron escuela.
La obra de Nikolái Gógol, considerado por muchos críticos como el padre del realismo ruso, sirvió para sentar las bases de lo que sería el Siglo de Oro de las letras rusas.
