The settings of the novel move from Singapore to Germany, to Austria, to the Bohemian areas of the Czech Republic, to Kansas, to France and Italy, with a backdrop of happenings dealing with conflicts and their resolution over time in castle towns and cities of old Bohemia, and the prospect of an elaborately planned contemporary murder influenced by those happenings in the history of that area of Europe.
