This circuitous route involved numerous tragedies that I managed to avoid, including surviving a horrific automobile accident at age 11, a near-drowning in the Atlantic Ocean, an almost fatal accident at swim practice due to lack of supervision, a deadly airplane crash, a harrowing skid on an icy highway with an oncoming semi-truck, a life-threatening complication during a dental procedure, a narrow miss of the deadliest structural collapse of a hotel in U.S. history, and a lightning strike on an airplane.Some people dwell on the things they wish could have happened in their lives. However, for what didn’t happen to me ultimately led me on a path to enriching the lives of others. The most profound sense of fulfillment was not only assisting thousands of families in navigating the intricate and challenging roads of the autism spectrum and the co-occurring disorders that often proved elusive to identify, but it was also the privilege of caring for my son, Nathan, as a caregiver and caretaker since 1992 to the present.The journey looks at survival and how to appreciate every day of our lives.The book includes the first study on early diagnosis on autism and impacting thousands of people worldwide.I am the Founder and Chairman Emeritus of the US Autism Association (formerly known as the US Autism & Asperger Association). As of 2025, I am a Board member and Treasurer of Divergent World Collective, Inc. (DBA US Autism Association). Fifty percent of the story centers around my three decades in sports, that includes a decade in professional and collegiate sports.
