Part one describes the family genealogy and immigration of six siblings to the US. In Part Two the soldier brothers tell their war story in their own words with interspersed quotes from Father's letters. Part Three follows one of the Ferguson brothers to Kansas where he finds unexpected adventure involving the assault of an Osage chief, arrests by Ft. Smith US Marshals, detention in the jail called "Hell on the Border," and his son-in-law's murder trial. Besides the Osage tribe, his Kansas neighbors included a French Indian trader named Gokey, some notorious mass murderers, and the real Little House on the Prairie characters. Part four contains family tree charts for Ferguson, Gokey, Preston, and Mundy back to the original immigrant in each family.
