Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology has moved from a peripheral generation option to a structural element of the modern electricity system. This shift in scale changes the central analytical question. When PV occupies only a marginal share of electricity supply, the dominant concern is deployment. Once PV becomes deeply embedded in the power system, however, the more consequential question is whether the installed fleet can deliver energy dependably over long operating lifetimes and under diverse field conditions.


In this context, reliability is not a secondary technical attribute, but a governing determinant of energy yield, economic value, and confidence in long-term performance projections. This book approaches PV system reliability as a multiscale and interdisciplinary question, examining the reliability of PV power systems from device to system level, and including context on availability and maintainability. An international team of expert editors and contributors seek to answer the following questions: how reliable are PV systems in practice, how should that reliability be modelled, and which design, testing, monitoring, and operational strategies can most effectively enhance it?
