This book introduces the topic of optimal coordination of overcurrent protection of power systems. It starts with an overview of optimization, and then moves to explain some fundamentals of power system protection. The author then explains the coordination problem by using directional overcurrent relays. This chapter addresses many essential steps in designing such optimal coordinators. The next chapter applies these mathematical formulations in solving many standard test systems. After that, some popular hybrid optimization schemes are covered by revealing the main mechanism behind them.
