Few institutions have exercised a more profound influence on the intellectual history of Europe than the medieval university, and few texts have occupied a more central place within that institution than the Bible. From the emergence of the first universities in the late eleventh and twelfth centuries to the transformations that reshaped learning at the close of the Middle Ages, Scripture stood at the heart of scholarly inquiry, theological reflection, educational practice, and intellectual debate. The Bible was not merely an object of devotion or a source of ecclesiastical authority. It was the foundational text around which entire systems of teaching, interpretation, and academic culture were organized. To understand medieval universities, therefore, one must understand their engagement with Scripture. Likewise, to understand the development of biblical scholarship in the medieval West, one must examine the institutions that nurtured, refined, and disseminated its methods.
