Maternal mortality remains one of the most persistent public health challenges confronting Nigeria, with the burden particularly pronounced in rural and underserved communities of northern Nigeria. This book examines the prevalence, determinants, causes, and health-system challenges associated with maternal mortality in Adamawa North Senatorial Zone, with particular attention to the experiences of communities in Maiha, Mubi North, and Mubi South Local Government Areas. The study is grounded in community-based evidence and seeks to move beyond explanations that focus exclusively on medical causes of maternal death by examining the wider socioeconomic, geographical, cultural, infrastructural, and health-system conditions that influence maternal outcomes. The manuscript identifies important contributors to maternal mortality, including distance to health facilities, shortages of skilled birth attendants, poor utilisation of antenatal care, low socioeconomic status, inadequate referral systems, and delays in accessing emergency obstetric services.
