He is charming, well-liked, prosperous, and surprisingly single. He hasn't given romance any consideration because he and his father, a widower, live the bachelor lifestyle. The remote island would be an excellent place for him to spend some time before becoming involved in the family company with his father. Kilmeny Gordon is lovely, bright, and perfect in all respects except that she is mute. Due to her disabilities and the controversy surrounding her birth, she has lived under protection all her life. She passes the time by playing her violin in her favorite lonely area and assisting her aunt and uncle on the farm. Eric brings a whole new universe and a friendship that excites and frightens her with him when he wanders into her secret orchard. Kilmeny is aware that he will soon have to return to his life on the mainland, a world filled with business meetings, parties, and prejudiced individuals, where she will hold him back and prevent him from ever fitting in. The fact that she believes the only way to love him is by letting him go makes it difficult for Eric to convince her that she is the one woman he will ever love.

Lucy Maud Montgomery fue una periodista y novelista canadiense, especialmente reconocida por las novelas de _Ana de las Tejas Verdes_.
