Homage to Catalonia is George Orwell's lucid, unsentimental account of his service with the POUM militia during the Spanish Civil War, and of the revolutionary Barcelona he encountered in 1936-37. Combining memoir, reportage, political analysis, and battlefield testimony, the book moves from the mud and boredom of the Aragon front to the factional violence of the May Days. Its style is characteristically plain yet morally charged: Orwell distrusts rhetoric, records particulars, and places lived experience against the distortions of propaganda.
