Every civilization that has sought to preserve, interpret, transmit, and understand inherited texts has, whether consciously or unconsciously, confronted the problems that stand at the center of these two disciplines. Medieval sources occupy a particularly important place in this intellectual history because they survive at the intersection of memory, material culture, linguistic transformation, religious authority, and historical change. They are products of societies in which manuscripts were copied by hand, texts circulated through complex networks of transmission, and translation served as one of the principal mechanisms through which knowledge moved across linguistic, cultural, and political boundaries. The study of these sources therefore requires methods capable of addressing both the history of textual transmission and the history of textual interpretation.
