A country barn has always been a fascinating place for kids. So many places to hide and play, a kid could spend many happy hours jumping into and hiding in the hay, riding the pulley rope down from the loft to the ground below, hiding in the loft from marauding Indians. Many a city cousin would fall in love with the country farm on their first visit, so much to do and see. The smell of the warm bodies of the horses and cows and fresh cut hay could stay in a person's memory for many years. But kids raised on the farm saw it in a whole different light. They saw the hard, back breaking work, the long days and short nights, the cold winters and hot summers and not being able to escape either, with little or no time for play or rest. And although, Greene County had its share of farm land, the beautifully wooded rolling hills of Crowley's Ridge made the land more apropos to the raising of cattle and horses. But who could guess the dark secrets buried beneath the serene terrain that is 'Greene County'?
