Viera has decided to leave her teaching career. She has her hands full as one of the Pillars of earth, a magic wielder, and a person who knows about aliens. Part of this position is being subjected to the red tape of the government officials. Watching her friend, Betsy, navigate those obstacles almost makes it worth it. 

Despite the krottel, an alien race, found on Earth, the officials decide the threat isn't large enough to take action. Concerned their lackadaisical approach will precipitate disaster for earth, but unable to do anything about it, Viera heads to Abritos, the chanzii home planet, with Thorn to see if it'll be ready for their repopulation soon.

Everything seems to be going in the right direction for both Thorn's planet and earth. But why does Thorn's ship find a krottel ship near earth every time they scan?
