It is best known for introducing the Mandate of Heaven (天命, tiān mìng), a belief that a ruler's authority depends on moral behavior and justice. This idea deeply influenced how Chinese dynasties understood power and legitimacy.
During the Western Zhou period (西周, Xī Zhōu), the dynasty built a strong feudal system (封建制度, fēng jiàn zhì dù), where land was distributed to loyal nobles who governed in the king's name. Rituals (礼, lǐ), music (乐, yuè), and ancestor worship were essential parts of political and social life.
In the Eastern Zhou period (东周, Dōng Zhōu), central authority weakened, and many regional states gained power. This time of change encouraged new ideas in philosophy (哲学, zhé xué), governance, and warfare, laying the foundation for later intellectual traditions such as Confucianism (儒家, rú jiā).
The Zhou era also saw growth in agriculture (农业, nóng yè), trade (贸易, mào yì), and astronomy (天文学, tiān wén xué), showing a civilization that combined practical skills with deep cultural thinking. Even as political control declined, its ideas continued to shape China for generations.
