A reader and record dedicated to the Afro-Brazilian religion, combining West African beliefs with Roman Catholicism

After their arrival in Brazil, following a traumatic crossing of the Atlantic, enslaved peoples from West Africa sought to reconstruct their sacred cultural and belief systems within a hostile environment. The terreiros (ritual grounds) they established are still active sites of worship centuries later, bearing witness to an ever-adaptive religion celebrated both in Brazil and internationally within Afro-diasporic communities. Published as both a book and a double LP, Candomblé: Sacred Rhythms in Brazil honors these beliefs, and the musical tradition that accompanies them, by documenting the past while critically and artistically reflecting on its contemporary evolution and future possibilities.
