broadband optical access networks and fiber-to-the-home: systems technologies and deployment strategies
Reseña del libro "broadband optical access networks and fiber-to-the-home: systems technologies and deployment strategies"
after almost 16 years of r (2) growing interest worldwide in ftth systems, and significant deployment of broadband optical access ftth systems by ntt, japan (reaching more than 0.5 million homes in july 2003 and growing rapidly) and many forward-looking communities in us, europe and asia; and (3) recent push by major us telecom operators (sbc, verizon, bell south) and cable msos (comcast, cox, time warner) to compete and become the serious leader in the ultimate broadband service provider, and the declared goal of several european governments and their telecom operators (british telecom, french telecom, deutsch telecom, telia, etc.) to become the leading broadband country in europe. furthermore, the key optoelectronics technologies for access systems have matured and the cost is coming down due to industry slowdown in the long-haul and metro sectors. it is time to expect the growth of optical broadband access systems in the next 5-10 years or so, and time for ftth optical broadband services (with 10-100 mb/s ethernet access) to become dominant over the transitional copper access (adsl) and coaxial cable access (cable modem), initially for high-end broadband users, then spreading to more average users. based on these considerations, it is the right time for this proposed book. with the publication date early 2005 it is good timing when a strong surge with sustained growth in interest on ftth and broadband optical access is expected. the chapters contain a good introductory overview of the topic by appropriate experts from a variety of institutions (r& d groups, broadband network planners from major telecom operators and cable tv companies, and broadband optical access system equipment companies, etc.) the chapters will have a mix of introductory and intermediate level technical content as some of the topics are more advanced. it will provide an up-to-date comprehensive overview of the topic of ftth and broadband optical access technologies, network applications, services and deployment trends. it will serve as a key must-read book for a large number of readers in a wide range of industries including telecom, datacom, broadband access network operators and broadband multimedia service providers. it is also intended to strike a balance between the key emerging system technologies and considerations for broadband access network and services strategies.
