Renowned as a philosopher, theologian, mystic, preacher, ecclesiastical leader, and Minister General of the Franciscan Order, he has often been remembered for his synthesis of intellectual rigor and spiritual depth. Yet beneath the many dimensions of his thought lies a unifying center that has not always received the attention it deserves: his lifelong engagement with Sacred Scripture. The Bible was not merely one source among many in Bonaventure’s theological enterprise. It was the wellspring from which his theology emerged, the framework that organized his understanding of reality, and the ultimate horizon toward which all learning and spiritual practice were directed. To understand Bonaventure adequately, therefore, one must understand the scriptural vision that shaped every aspect of his thought.
The present study explores that vision by examining Bonaventure as a reader, interpreter, theologian, and spiritual guide whose entire intellectual project was grounded in Scripture. More specifically, it seeks to illuminate what may be called the Franciscan vision of Scripture, a way of reading the Bible that developed within the early Franciscan movement and attained one of its most sophisticated expressions in the writings of Bonaventure. This vision does not treat Scripture simply as a repository of doctrines, nor merely as an historical record of divine revelation. Instead, it regards the biblical text as a living medium through which God communicates wisdom, transforms the human heart, and leads creation toward its ultimate fulfillment in Christ.
