In a work of great wisdom and insight, art critic and philosopher Arthur Danto delivers a compact, masterful tour of Andy Warhol’s personal, artistic, and philosophical transformations. Danto traces the evolution of the pop artist, including his early reception, relationships with artists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, and the Factory phenomenon. He offers close readings of individual Warhol works, including their social context and philosophical dimensions, key differences with predecessors such as Marcel Duchamp, and parallels with successors like Jeff Koons. Danto brings to bear encyclopedic knowledge of Warhol’s time and shows us Warhol as an endlessly multidimensional figure—artist, political activist, filmmaker, writer, philosopher—who retains permanent residence in our national imagination. Arthur C. Danto (Ann Arbor, 1924 – Nueva York, 2013) fue un influyente filósofo del arte, crítico y profesor en la Universidad de Columbia. Reconocido por su teoría del “fin del arte”, argumentó que, tras las rupturas del siglo XX, el arte ya no sigue una narrativa histórica lineal. Su concepto del “mundo del arte” sostiene que una obra es arte si es aceptada por la comunidad artística. Danto también fue crítico de arte en The Nation y miembro de la American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Recibió becas Fulbright y Guggenheim, y presidió la American Society for Aesthetics.

Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentran La transfiguración del lugar común (1981), Después del fin del arte (1997), El abuso de la belleza (2003), Más allá de la caja Brillo (2003) y Qué es el arte (2013). Su ensayo Encounters and Reflections (1990) fue galardonado con el National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism.
