The rhythms of the earth can be seen in, for example, the daily cycle of day and night, or in the changing seasons. Rudolf Steiner spoke about how Christian festivals such as Easter, Whitsun and Christmas fitted not just into these patterns, but also into larger cosmic rhythms and, on a smaller scale, human rhythms. In this concise, readable book Charles Kovacs explores the structure of our calendar year and looks in detail at the background to each Christian festival, including lesser-known ones such as St John's Tide and Michaelmas. This book is based on lectures Charles Kovacs originally gave at the Rudolf Steiner School in Edinburgh. Kovacs strove to develop in the children a love and understanding of the seasons in the cycle of the year; parents were keen to be involved too, and asked Kovacs to give a series of lectures on the subject to deepen their own understanding. One of a series of four books without text, which lead the young child through the seasons of the year.

Charles Kovacs nace en Becs, Austria, el 8 de febrero de 1907. Abandona su país natal en 1938 en la época de la anexión de Austria por parte del Tercer Reich y se alista en el ejército británico en África Oriental. Después de la segunda Guerra Mundial, se establece en Gran Bretaña y en 1956 empieza su labor como profesor de Clase Principal en la Escuela Waldorf-Steiner de Edimburgo, donde permanece hasta su jubilación en 1976.
Durante ese período, Charles Kovacs escribe extensas notas de sus clases día tras día. Desde entonces esos textos han sido utilizados y apreciados durante muchos años por los maestros de Edimburgo y otras Escuelas Waldorf. Abarcan temas de historia, mitología y ciencias.
Fallece en Edimburgo en Septiembre de 2001.
