Old Doc Weeks, the previous owner, helps Amy and teaches her how to use a shotgun and milk a cow. Amy is desperate for money to meet the monthly payments on the farm and support her family. She discovers a secret room off the master room closet. She finds rationed goods and decides to sell them on the black market. Aunt Magdalene manages the Jupiter Junction railroad hotel. It's during a train derailment that Amy meets good looking U.S. Army Lieutenant Rob Weeks. He falls in love with her, but she resists. Or does she? A young teacher is murdered and soon Amy is being threatened. Is her farm alive with promises of a new life, or is it the menace of an unseen force? Still, she manages to protect her children from danger until one fateful day.
