this book covers all the major issues related to optical switching, ranging from the fabrication of all-optical switch fabrics (devices that can switch optical signals without converting them to electrical) to the design and implementation of optical cross-connects (the cores of optical switching nodes) and to the switching techniques specifically designed for optical networks. one can distinguish three major optical switching techniques, i.e., optical packet switching, generalized multiprotocol label switching and optical burst switching. these three techniques will be presented in great detail in three separate chapters. because of the obvious benefits that it promises, optical switching lies in the center of interest both for the optical networks research community and for the broadband networks industry.
