In MOOSEMEAT, TURNIPS AND BETSY, Celina's perseverance is taxed beyond belief, pitted against unfavourable odds, beginning with the loss of her father and her subsequent banishment to a boarding school in a foreign country. By the late l930's Celina faces the cruel, inhospitable climate and sparse population in British Columbia's North with a husband and six young children, one of whom, Betsy, suffers multiple disabilities. Her triumphs and failures would fracture the most seasoned and experienced, but the plucky greenhorn has no viable option. With the onset of World War II, virtually as a single parent, Celina dauntlessly shoulders on, her predicament exacerbated by lack of resources, isolation, an eccentric neighbour and unpredictable challenges. Haunted by the subsequent and sudden disappearance of Betsy, Celina's youngest daughter launches into a lifelong search to unravel the mystery.
