Historian Thomas D. "Tom" Perry shares his journeys through African-American history in his thirty year career of studying history along the Virginia and North Carolina border between Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina, and Ararat, Patrick County, Virginia. Subjects include Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, John Hope Franklin, and the slaves that lived in the ironically named Free State of Patrick.
